Façade Study

Created for "Magic and Architecture," a design workshop led by Leslie Van Duzer

This façade model is the culmination of a workshop exploring methods of illusion in architectural design. The flat plane of the wall is pierced by solid blocks, which on the exterior surface create letters and serve as signage for the retail space, while their interior masses are detailed to serve programmatic purposes as shelving, countertops and cabinets. The model is constructed without fasteners, held together by a novel system of laser-cut trim strips that slot into the blocks to simultaneously compress the several layers of wall together, hold the piercing elements in place, and serve an aesthetic purpose in outlining the lettering on the façade.
